Whistling Woods

Amboli, Maharashtra
2016-2018

A set of guest rooms designed for a lepidopterist and his family in Amboli , situated in the Western Ghats. Built on a dense lateritic and a fairly sloping plot surrounded by a reserved forest, the rooms are designed in an effort to minimize the alteration of the existing terrain and its surroundings. While Clay floor tiles, exposed Laterite walls and Mangalore tile roofs make up the overall material palette; mezzanines, arched windows, private courts and verandahs provide spaces to experience the surrounding forest.

This region receives the highest rainfall in the state, the idea here is to use laterite so that it can age over the seasons to blend with the site, which itself is largely composed of the same rock.
